Press Conference on Election of Kremlin Official to Head of Interpol

Panel: Bill Browder and Mikhail Khodorkovsky

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Bill Browder, head of Hermitage Capital, head of Global Magnitsky Justice campaign, and author of Red Notice, and Mikhail Khodorkovsky, the founder of the Open Russia Movement and former political prisoner in Putin’s Russia, invite you to join them at a press conference concerning the upcoming Interpol election that is to take place on Wednesday at the 87th Session of the General Interpol Assembly in the United Arab Emirates.

Members of the panel are to discuss the serious implications of the election of General of the Russian Interior Ministry Alexander Prokopchuk to the position of head of Interpol.

Since 2006 Alexander Prokopchuk has been part of the Moscow Bureau for Interpol, first as deputy head, and later as the head of the organisation. Therefore, Mr Prokopchuk is responsible for all the politically motivated arrest warrants issued by Interpol at the Kremlin’s request.

The Kremlin has already used international arrest warrants provided through Interpol (aka a Red Notice) to further its political interests, and the Kremlin has a long history of using this multilateral organisation to target its critics.

Both speakers have been personally targeted by Kremlin Interpol arrest warrants. As such, Bill Browder and Mikhail Khodorkovsky feel it necessary to discuss the negative implications for freedom fighters and democracy activists worldwide, should Alexander Prokopchuk be elected to the head of the Interpol.
