Former Judge Exposes Russia’s Corrupt Judicial System

April 5, 2012

On Wednesday a former Russian judge Sergei Zlobin tells a news conference that he was forced to resign for his efforts to reform the corrupt judicial system in the southern region, according to Agence France Presse.

Zlobin explained that judges systematically faced intense pressure from officials at all levels of government with a stake in trial outcomes. He said, “A Russian judge is the most dependent of people and only very rarely expresses his own opinion on matters he is examining.”
Zlobin created enemies when he attempted to clear over 2000 cases, which he claims were left intentionally to languish in the courts.

Shortly after, media reports accused Zlobin of corruption, and he found himself being investigated by a regional committee. Though no criminal case was filed, Zlobin was pressured by the investigation to resign.
