Khodorkovsky Play To Be Premiered In Russia

December 19, 2013

Moscow’s theatre the TEATR.DOC is preparing a play about Mikhail Khodorkovsky to be premiered in the first half of 2014.

The play, based on original documents and first-hand materials, is written by screenwriter Olga Mikhailova. Vladimir Mirzoyev, the prominent Russian director famous for his work in the Theatre of Stanislavsky, the Vakhtangov theatre in Lenkom, and Teatrium on Serpukhovka, will be directing the play.

Director of the theatre, Elena Gremina, gave a glimpse of what is to come in an interview with RIA Novosti:

Vladimir Mirzoyev is working together with the playwright Olga Mikhailova. I know that the play will be about the Khodorkovsky case. I also know that in the course of the play they will have an interesting twist. Now they are rehearsing, and some amendments will be done during this period.”

The Play about Mikhail Khodorkovsky is not the first production staged at the TEATR.DOC that is based on politically motivated trials. In 2010 the theatre presented ‘One hour eighteen minutes’ – a play about Sergei Magnitsky, the Russian lawyer killed in pre-trial detention in 2009. The theatre also presented two plays about the Russian music band Pussy Riot – ‘Khamsud. Continue’ and ‘Pussy Riot. Continue’.
