A list of political prisoners presently in jail in Russia has been published by the Russian human rights NGO ‘The Memorial’.

The list, published yesterday, was part of the commemorations for the Remembrance Day for the Victims of Political Repression.

The annual October 30^th date was chosen by Soviet political prisoners back in 1974, as the day symbolising struggle and solidarity. On this day, year on year, prisoners would hold protests and hunger strikes across the Soviet prison camps.

Today’s list consists of 70 names chosen according to criteria developed by The Memorial, however the NGO states that the list cannot be totally comprehensive.
