Dear Mr Khodorkovsky,

The news we just recieved is just overwhelming. By these few words I want to tell you how delighted I am that after 10 years you finally can enjoy freedom, freedom which we usually take for granted. I am particularly glad that Hans Dietrich Genscher, one of the leading european figures and a great liberal was able, thanks to his great diplomatic experience, to make it possible that you could immediately go to Germany where, I am sure, you can spend Christmas with your family. I want to add that you can be proud of your son, whom I had the pleasure to meet in Strasbourg.

I wish you all the best. This is surely going to be the greatest Christmas you ever could enjoy.
