Russian Government Appeals ECHR Decision in “Pichugin v Russia” Case

February 8, 2013

The Russian Government has filed an appeal to the European Court of Human Rights against its previous decision, which ruled in favour of ex-Yukos employee Alexey Pichugin.

Pichugin’s lawyer, Kseniya Kostromina, stated that the decision had been appealed on the last possible date, even though the lawyers had not been notified of the Russian Government’s complaint within the 3-month period allowed for appeals (by January 24).

A committee of five ECHR judges will meet within the next 3 months to consider the appeal. In the event that the judges rule that there are grounds for appeal, the Strasbourg Court will question representatives of the Russian Government as well as Pichugin’s lawyers further on the case.
