Justice Ministry Sued by Human Rights Activists for Discriminatory ECHR Judge Selection Process

April 20, 2012

Human rights activists have sued the Justice Ministry, following the Zamoskvoretsky District Court’s refusal on Wednesday the appeal of Karinna Moskolenko of the International Protection Center to overturn the Justice Ministry’s selection of candidates for Russian judges to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) reports Andrey Kozenko of Russica Izvestia.

Moskalenko filed the appeal in November 2011 on the grounds that the selection process was undemocratic, non-transparent and discriminatory. Announcement of the competition came in July 2011, giving applicants only one month to submit their applications. The details of the contest were neither made publicly available on the Rossiyskaya Gazeta website nor provided in an official publication of the ministerial order.

The human rights activists say they will appeal against the court ruling submitting evidence to demonstrate that the Justice Ministry’s handled of the selection illegitimately.
