On April 6, 2013 Marina Philippovna Khodorkovskaya, Mikhail’s mother, travelled to Segezha to visit her son. Her visit, however, had to be conducted through a glass wall and she could only hear his voice through a telephone. After the meeting she was interviewed by a local television station:

“The meeting went as always, over the phone, through the glass. In fact, to spend a day travelling for a 4-hour talk on the phone… in the civilized world is a violation of human rights”

Answering the question of whether Mikhail has changed, she stated: “of course he has become kinder and wiser; this year is a special year for us – my husband is turning 80, Misha is turning 50 and it’s the 55^th anniversary of my wedding.”
