Khodorkovsky’s Orphanage Celebrates 19th Anniversary

May 9, 2013

The Russian newspaper MK Karelia has published an article reflecting on the 19th anniversary of the Podmoskovny boarding school, founded by Mikhail Khodorkovsky in 1994. Khodorkovsky established the school in the hope that it would be a place for children from disadvantaged backgrounds to call home and excel in.

The article notes that an entire generation of “interesting, free, curious and confident people” have been raised at the school. It notes that:

“Each April Podmoskovny traditionally celebrates the first graduation year. A mass of guests, including former students, parents of existing pupils, and even prominent Russians who just care about the fate of Khodorkovsky’s creation, gather together at the school grounds.”

It concludes that Khodorkovsky dreamed that the school could become a “city for the thousands of troubled children.” Unfortunately, the article acknowledges, his ability to realise this vision was cut short by his imprisonment. Read the full article here.
