Mikhail Khodorkovsky Meets With Lithuanian Foreign Minister

March 27, 2018

On Monday March 26, Open Russia founder Mikhail Khodorkovsky met with Lithuanian Foreign Minister Linas Linkevicius to discuss relations between Lithuania and Russian civil society.

According to Linkevicius, “Lithuania doesn’t confuse ‘Russia’ with the Kremlin, and so support for Russian civil society and democratic forces occupies an important place in Lithuania’s priorities.”  The discussion went on to cover the status of civil society in Russia and possibilities for the unification of the country’s democratic forces.

Zygimantas Pavilionis, who represents the Lithuanian Christian Democrats in Parliament, and Gabrielus Landsbergis have called on the mayor of Vilnius to establish a memorial to the late Russian opposition politician Boris Nemtsov, who was murdered outside the Kremlin in 2015.

According to Pavilionis, “there is an ongoing war against the Kremlin regime, and the symbol of this struggle was the sacrifice of Boris Nemtsov.”  The representative for the Christian Democrats has also requested that the central administration of the country’s capital rename the square outside the Russian Embassy “as was done in Washington”.
