“Today’s decision basically maintains the impression that it is a politically motivated trial. The coming into force of the verdict is a setback for the effort towards more rule of law in Russia. It contradicts President Medvedev’s endeavour for modernisation and his goal to strengthen an independent Russian justice system. (…) Therefore, the confirmation of the verdict against Mikhail Khodorkovsky and Platon Lebedev is a wrong signal; for Russia’s partners in the West too: legal security is a precondition for a modern and strong Russia”
