‘Russia: A Postmodern Dictatorship?’ London Event Live-streamed

October 8, 2013

The Legatum Institute in London, jointly with the Institute of Modern Russia, will tomorrow begin a Lecture Series with a panel discussion focusing on the challenges of transition in modern Russia.

Based on a report written by Peter Pomerantsev, the panel will discuss how the democratic façade, artificially created by the government of Vladimir Putin, has masked the construction of a new authoritarian model in Russia.  The appearance of free elections, free media, free civil society and free markets confounds and subdues Western criticism, while Russia’s influence in the region and in global affairs remains strong.  Anne Applebaum will moderate a conversation on how this new authoritarianism works inside Russia, what it means for relationships with the West, and its impact on Russia’s ‘near abroad.’

Speakers

Pavel Khodorkovsky, President, Institute of Modern Russia (Introductory Remarks)

Peter Pomerantsev, Journalist, Producer, Author

Anne Applebaum, Director of Global Transitions, Legatum Institute (Moderator)

Livestream

The live-stream can be viewed here at 16:30 London time, on Wednesday, October 9.
