On the evening 24th November 2018 the winners of the Journalism as a Profession award are set be announced. The award ceremony is taking place as part of the Russia without Putin conference in Prague.

The winners were chosen by an independent jury of journalists and political experts. The jury is headed by Maria Slonim.

The winners from each category are:

Investigate journalism

• Roman Dobrokhotov: The Salisbury Reports. Four parts (1) (2) (3) (4) all published on the Insider.

Panorama

• Shura Burtin: The head of the Grozny Memorial Oyub Titiev is being tried on drug charges. Published in Meduza.

Interview

• Olesya Gerasimenko: „I am the perfect Russian person“. Face the rapper: from „Burgers“ to Mandelstam. Published on BBC Russian Service.

Regional publication

• Anna Yarovaya: Rewriting Stalin Terror in Sandarmokh. Published in 7×7.

New Media

• Olga Alferova: I’m over it. A special project about domestic abuse; It’s all rather complicated – an interactive film. Published through Takiye Dela.

The jury did not pick a winner from the opinion pieces.

In addition to these awards for specific publications there are a number of other awards being presented.

The special laureate prize is being awarded to Mediazone for its outsiding and comprehensive coverage on the torturing practices of the Russian police and prison officials. Some of its publications on this topic have led to criminal investigations into the Russian Penel Services.

An additional prize has been award to Katerina Gordeeva and Roman Super for their investigative film called: The Teatralnaya Affair: How Mr Soborennikov spent 218 million dollars.
