The French philosopher and writer André Glucksmann has passed away in Paris at the age of 79. One of the brightest figures amongst the New Philosophers, he was known for his civil and political activism. Over the years, he provided ongoing public support for Mikhail Khodorkovsky, published articles in the French press about the former Yukos chief, and signed open letters to the Russian authorities calling for his release on several occasions. In the spring of 2014, MBK and Glucksmann were able to meet in person (they were also joined by Bernard-Henri Lévy) and make each other’s acquaintance.

Mikhail Khodorkovsky has expressed his condolences over the death of Andre Glucksmann.

“I deeply regret the passing of André Glucksmann, a wonderful person and a great thinker. I will always remember the very human support he offered me during my years in prison and throughout our short personal acquaintance, which was, alas, all too brief.”
